If you’ve ever tried using a standard, off-the-shelf infrared lamp for glass research, you know the frustration. They’re designed to spread heat evenly. That’s great for a toaster, but it’s useless when you’re trying to figure out how a new glass composition handles localized stress or a sudden phase shift. You don’t need “even.” You need a gradient.
More Than Just a Different Length
Most shops will tell you they can “customize” a lamp, but usually, that just means they can cut it to a different length. That’s not where the real magic happens. We look at power density. By playing around with the filament winding pitch and tweaking the wattage across the tube, we can build “hot zones” and “cool zones” right into a single lamp. It’s a huge win for your workflow. You get the exact thermal profile you need without having to wrestle with a mountain of complex multi-zone controllers. You just tell us the Watts per centimeter your substrate needs, and we make it happen.
The Trade-offs (The “Gotchas”)
Here’s the thing: when you push a twin-tube lamp to these kinds of power densities, you’re pushing the quartz envelope to its absolute limit. When we crank the wattage to get that rapid melt or anneal, things get hot. Fast. You’ve got to make sure your housing has plenty of breathing room and that your cooling fans can actually handle the heat spike. If you skimp on the cooling, your filaments are going to burn out way sooner than they should. It’s a simple equation: more power needs more air.
Putting it to Work in the Lab
