
Getting the Wattage Right for Your Bathroom Heater
If you pick the wrong wattage for your ceiling heater, you’re going to end up with one of two things: a room that’s still freezing in the corners, or a power bill that makes you wince. It really comes down to how much space you’re trying to heat and how high your ceilings are.

Infrared heat moves in straight lines. It doesn’t just “fill” the room like a cloud; it hits you. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room, a 400W to 600W lamp usually does the trick. It gets you warm fast. But if you try to cram a 1000W lamp into a shoebox of a room, you’ll overheat the place in minutes. Your thermostat will start clicking on and off every few seconds, which is a great way to kill your relays. Now, if you’ve got a big master bath or those fancy high ceilings, you’ll need more muscle—probably between 800W and 1200W. The higher the ceiling, the more heat disappears before it even reaches your shoulders. You can’t just “turn it up” to fix that; you actually need more thermal output to bridge that gap.
The secret to a cozy room
Here is a tip: don’t just buy one massive, scorching heater. It’s much better to spread out a few lower-wattage lamps. Why? Because nobody likes “hot zones”—that annoying feeling where your head is baking but your toes are still ice. Plus, if you wire them in parallel, you’ve got a safety net. If one bulb pops, the rest of the system keeps humming along.
One last thing to check
High-wattage lamps feel great the second you flip the switch, but they pull a lot of juice right at the start. Before you go all-in on 1200W lamps, take a look at your wiring. Especially in older homes. If your wires are too thin for the load, they’ll heat up. That leads to voltage drops, and your expensive new lamps will burn out way faster than they should.
