Let’s be honest: there is nothing worse than stepping out of your work gear and into a freezing cold locker room. It’s miserable. Most people try to fix this with forced-air heaters, but those are a waste of time and money. They spend all their energy heating the air and the ceiling, leaving you shivering while you wait for the room to actually warm up. That’s why we stick with ceiling-mounted infrared (IR) heaters.
Why it actually works
Think of it like the sun. You don’t feel the air around you get hot before you feel the sun on your skin; you just feel the heat instantly. IR waves travel in a straight line. They don’t mess around with the air—they go straight for the floor and the people standing on it. For a workshop where guys are constantly cycling in and out, this is the only way to go. You get a blast of warmth the second you walk in.
The gear we use
To get that “instant” feeling, we use short-wave emitters. These run hotter and push heat deeper, so you aren’t just warming your clothes, you’re actually warming your body. Depending on what your building’s power grid looks like, we usually wire these for 220V or 380V. One pro tip: mount them high. You want a wide “cone” of heat that covers the whole floor. If they’re too low, you end up with a few people getting scorched while everyone else is still cold.
A few things to watch out for
You can’t just screw these into any old ceiling and call it a day. Short-wave IR getsintense. If your ceiling isn’t fire-rated, you need a reflective heat shield, or you might actually scorch the building. Also, don’t go overboard with the wattage. If you put a massive heater in a tiny room, it’ll turn into a sauna in about three minutes. The smartest move? Toss in a PIR motion sensor or a simple timer. It kills the power when the room is empty, which saves your electricity bill and keeps the tubes from burning out too fast.
Keeping it running
The best part is that these things are basically “set it and forget it.” No filters to swap, no dusty ducts to scrub. The only thing you really need to do is keep the quartz tubes clean. If dust builds up on the glass, it creates hot spots that can crack the tube. Give them a quick wipe now and then, and they’ll last for years.
